Indoor Rainy Day Ideas

San Francisco drizzle keeping us inside? Here are eighteen ways we keep the day rich, playful, and full of learning without a trip to the park.

We love our daily park walks — they are a cornerstone of life at Wisely SF. But San Francisco has its rainy days, and on those mornings we lean into the coziness of staying in. Rainy days turn out to be some of our most creative days of the year.

Here is a list of what we actually do on indoor days — no screen time, just real play and real learning:

  1. Waiting for rain to go away — Sometimes the best thing is to simply watch the rain from the window together, talking about clouds, puddles, and weather.
  2. Share a smile with a kitten — Gentle animal interactions build empathy and calm.
  3. Paint — Open-ended art time with brushes, trays, and whatever colors feel right.
  4. Follow music and drum/tap out a pattern — Rhythm instruments and movement to music build coordination and listening skills.
  5. Read books — Quiet one-on-one and group storytime.
  6. Figuring out how to connect pipes — Open-ended construction play with pipe connectors challenges spatial reasoning and problem-solving.
  7. Practice putting on your own jacket — Self-care skills are real learning. We practice zipping, buttoning, and snapping every day.
  8. Stare at a fly — Child-led curiosity and observation. Science starts with noticing.
  9. Cook — Simple kitchen activities like stirring, pouring, and spreading are rich sensory experiences.
  10. Exploring with cream — Sensory play with shaving cream or whipped cream on a tray.
  11. Draw — Crayons, markers, chalk on a tray — mark-making in any form builds pre-writing skills.
  12. Wonder why there are stars in the sky — Big questions from small people. We sit with the wondering rather than rushing to an answer.
  13. Practice jam spreading — Fine motor work that also results in a snack.
  14. Dance party — Movement breaks are essential. A spontaneous dance party fixes almost anything.
  15. Dress up — Dramatic play builds language, empathy, and imagination.
  16. Sing with a stuffed animal — Music and comfort objects together make for very happy little ones.
  17. Count — Counting collections, counting steps across the room, counting fingers — math is everywhere.
  18. Rainy day, sleepy day — Sometimes we honor the slow energy of a gray morning and let rest come a little earlier.

Rain or shine, every day at Wisely SF is a full day of learning. Come visit us and see it in person.
